 when is the best time in your opinion to sow spring cabbage seed i.ve got a variety to sow wintergreen and i have two choices the first to raise the plants in pots in the poly tunnel then plant out in spring or plant the cabbage plants in a raised bed covered with a poly sheet

Cabbage wintergreen

Sow in August in soil prepared with farmyard manure or a general fertiliser to get your cabbages off to a head-start as they grow strongly and healthily.

As they grow in late summer and autumn be sure to water well and cover the cabbages with protective netting if pesky birds and cabbage white butterflies make an appearance.

They are hardy so really don't need to be covered.

Sowed mine in a seedtray and they're up already. Will pot on, plant out in raised bed when roots established, net and let grow till spring.

Ours are still in the packet but will be sown this week. I keep them in a netted cold frame to avoid the attentions of certain butterflies, who have an unerring eye for such things

just potted mine on last weekend, they will go in the bed soon and will be netted.

 thanks all for your replies much appreciated and I don't but pictorial packets so no info on packets and its always a good idea to get any info from the professional gardeners on this site

also bear in mind your location will have a slight impact on practice, we are very tropical here in Blackpool so I am little later due to very high average temps
