Poor goosegogs
« on: June 23, 2008, 15:49 »
Last year my gooseberry plant had grey mould/fungus on fruit and stems. One book told me this was caused by too many branches and not enough air getting through. So I pruned a few stems from the centre of the plant, to thin it out.
This year I have a very poor crop and the fruit is covered with brown patches. What's going wrong please?
I'm sure my old dad did absolutely nothing to our bushes (he was not a gardener) and we always had terrific crops.
I started out with nothing.....and I've still got most of it.

You need to spray it with washing soda solution - there should be a link somewhere on this forum.

You might have pruned out some fruiting shoots, which is not a big deal, but if you do not wish to bother with spraying there are resistant cultivars available. :)

Thanks guys. Probably a bit late to try any remedies this year as there are hardly any goosegogs on the plant.
I notice that there are plenty of new shoots coming from the base of the bush. Should I prune off the old branches at the end of this season and let the new growth have a go?
