Cucumber seeds
« on: June 23, 2009, 15:46 »
Hi

Im sure ive read somewhere that you shouldn't use seeds from something grown as an F1.  I can t remember why or what might happen if i did but i am wondering about keeping some of my cucumber seeds for next year.

Mine are an all female F1 variety it supposidly only produces female flowers but i had a good 30 or so male flowers but now i have plenty of cucumbers coming, i have picked 2 so far one of which ended up being huge and the seeds are also huge so thought if its ok to do so this cucumber is the one to use.

Any thoughts??

I know you shouldnt grow an F1 next to a non F1 incase they cross polinate and produce a Hybrid/Hybrid!! :D

The offspring may have the characteristics of either parent plant, which may not be desirable.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

If you save seeds of an F1 you will grow an F2 hybrid. In this any genes that are recessive (hidden) in the F1 MAY come through and you could end up with a whole range of different features, which could make the plants useless OR could give you features of a parent plant of the F1 that are actually desirable (such as having more but smaller fruit, fruiting over a longer period but less consistently etc). As collecting your own seeds is free (other than the compost that you grow them in), there is no harm in seeing what you get.

"i had a good 30 or so male flowers"

Tends to happen at the beginning of the season, particularly if the plants are stressed.
