I have quite a lot of woodlice around but have hardly seen any snails, a single slug and hardly any birds in my garden because of all the crows and ravens around, but something has had a good chew at my pansy plug plants. Are they the culprit?

I don't think the woodlice are your problem, they normally go for decaying or rotting vegetation.  But what does that say about your pansy plug plants?... +

I agree.  Woodlice are mostly beneficial, breaking down organic matter into something plants can use (similar place in the food web to earthworms). They might nibble the occasional root hair, but any damage is insignificant.

Edited by SP to add additional thought:  Woodlice mostly eat/clean up decaying vegetation.  Is there a chance you could have an un-diagnosed bacterial or fungal plant disease affecting the pansy plants?  Maybe woodlice are just cleaning up the damage?

Mmmm. I got them from a reputable place where I usually get them from and have had no problems before. They did look a bit straggly when they arrived but looked ok enough, so my OH put it down to me not planting them deep enough. I ordered replacements of the bigger size and they look better.

We have more than our fair share of woodlice.  Lift up a pot and it is alive with them, but they cause no harm.
They lived here in the woods before our houses were ever built.  I have never been able to grow Pansies, mine go mouldy.  Good luck with yours.  regards,  Mrs Bouquet
