Orchid shade shelf
« on: July 17, 2020, 21:11 »
I'm not sure I'd call my self crafty, but occasionally I'm wily, cunning or devious when the need arises.

My eldest son grows a few orchids, same as me.  They need protection from full sun outdoors, here is a shelf that I built for him that includes a built-in shade.  The wood is treated for outdoor use, no rot.

Hello Chrissie

I have been growing orchids for nearly 40 years.  I always say there is an orchid for everyone.  Can you manage African violets?  There is a shade-loving orchid species called Ludisia discolor that is cared for exactly like an African violet.  Mine blooms in February, with spikes of small white flowers with a yellow center.  The leaves are beautiful too, dark velvety green, with sparkling copper stripes.  Give that a try if you ever try orchids again.

Hi, Chrissi , I am glad you have asked.  I have one similarly.  The flowers have finished and I have put it with pots in the garden.   Don't know what to do next   ::)  Mrs  Bouquet

Love your shelf! Didn't know they could be put outside.
Sorry if I'm pinching your post but I have three bought from a local supermarket last year. After they had flowered I cut the stalk off then later re-potted them in orchid compost as the original pot was very tiny. They have put out a couple of new leaves but no sign of flowers yet. They're on the kitchen worktop by an east-facing window which gets dappled sun up until about 11am.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I think they do quite like being fairly pot bound, so it may take a little while before yours are forced to flower again, GG.  You can also buy orchid fertiliser which might stimulate flowers??
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
