Best treatment for powdery mildew?
« on: November 20, 2011, 21:55 »
Anyone got any recommendations from past experience??  Heard about crushing garlic and water then spraying as it's high in sulphur. Anyone had good results with this??

garlic is a possibility due to the high sulpher content .
Plant in full sunlight in a well-drained area.
Air flow and ventilation will discourage mildew growth.
Powdery mildew thrives where high rates of nitrogen have been used. High nitrogen promotes tender leaf formation, causing dense stands that are more susceptible to infections. Adequately fertilize but avoid stimulating succulent growth. Organic fertilizers or slow-release .
Prune infected plants to get rid of infected parts and increase airflow.
Disinfect your pruning tool in a bleach solution of one part household bleach to four parts water after each cut.
Watering plants in the morning gives the plants the rest of the day to dry off, discouraging establishment of diseases, including powdery mildew.Hope this helps :)

Was in garden centre today and seen a product called yellow sulphur.  It's a sulphur based powder fertiliser for hoeing/raking into the soil. It didn't say on the container that it could be used for the treatment of powdery mildew just that if it was used as a fertiliser in the soil that it would help guard against powdery mildew.  Does anyone know if this product could be used to maybe mix with water and spray on the leaves or dust the leaves with the powder to fight off my mildew problem??

The only product called Yellow Sulphur that is listed on the pesticides database is this one.

It was banned from sale at the end of last year as a pesticide, and is not legal to use for that purpose beyond the end of this year.

It will not be licensed for use as either a dustable powder beyond the end of this year, nor for use as you describe at all.

It sounds as though what you saw was the product re-purposed and cannot legally be used in ways other than described on the label.

I have never ever heard of it being applied as a drench in any event, which leads me to conclude that it would not be effective even if legal.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Would be quite tricky to make sprayable suspension of a powder in water anyway I think

This is the stuff.  I've found what I was looking for.  The Dobbies website has instructions for the product even though there wasn't any proper directions on the container in the shop!  This is it  http://www.dobbies.com/Vitax-Yellow-Sulphur-Disease-Control-175g/pid-105917  Apparently you just dust the affected area with the stuff.

The link I provided on the database was to the Vitax Yellow Sulphur product licence.

It's the same product and I note it is out of stock - perhaps it has indeed been withdrawn from stock.

I'm sure in one of Johns books he mentions milk & a squint on the net recommends a 10% mix with water but no more than 30% as this causes other 'stuff' to grow...

Interesting link yorkie. Havn't had a chance to read the link fully but will try later.  I know milk is supposed to be great for getting rid of mould but it's got to be raw, unpasturised, unhomogenized proper milk, not the kind of rubbish us lot get fed in the supermarkets etc.
