Sprouts - bah humbug!
« on: December 22, 2014, 16:18 »
Popped up to the plot this afternoon to see if any of my sprouts had put on weight.
Nope.
About the circumference of a penny.

I picked 6 of 'em to put on the Christmas plate anyhow - Mrs B. wasn't impressed.
Fortunately there seem to be plenty in the shops at the moment...  ???

I really don't have much luck with sprouts for Christmas - last year they got to a decent size but were blown by the end of November.
Think I'll add sprouts to the list of 'don't bother' as we only eat them 'symbolically' at Christmas - mostly to keep my dear old ma happy.

Pip pip,
Balders

Lots of good recipes around for sprouts. They are quite easy to grow once you get the hang of them. But there are early and late varieties of sprouts, some too early for Christmas.

Ummmmmm Sprouts - Balder new penny or old penny makes a difference ;)

Keep at it, my ones blew last year and this year I paid more attention to them and started harvesting from the bottom up and managed to get some reasonable sized baby sprouts, before they blew. I had fantastic Cauliflower last year but this year really was not so good. It's a learning process and it gives you the incentive to do better.

I love sprouts but mine are useless this year  :( This is made worst by the fact I have to pass a absolute newcomers plot with sprouts I can only dream of having which are just sat rotting (must be a fair weather gardener)  >:(

3 plants that appear very dwarfed. Picked practically all of the sprouts but they are tiny, if my mother had of continued to peel them they would have been the size of peas. Had to ring DD & tell her to bring 2lb home :(

My first successful year with sprouts.  I have grown Montgomery.  Only 1 plant has fallen over.  I have had a succession of sprouts ripening steadily.  I picked enough for 12 portions yesterday and there are still a fair few growing.

Mine failed I think it was due to the hot dry summer we do not have water on tap up the allotment.

Haha, we had a hot wet summer!! But seriously, we have not had any really cool weather this year apart from about four days, even when it snowed it was above freezing. We'll persevere

Don't give up Baldy keep going, I have found that they do like a well compacted soil unlike my  cauliflower I just cant grow them, they will be going on the don't bother to grow list for next year.
