Massive egg alert!!!
« on: April 30, 2011, 13:40 »
We came back from shopping late this morning to find one egg from each hen (always a good day). Who produced this monster i dont know!! I put one of the normals and a fifty pence  in for scale. The normal egg was one of todays  coming in at 52 grams. The beast is 99 grams!! I have looked through it with a strong light to see if it could be one of those eggs within another egg but it looks the same as a normal one, just mahoooosive!!!

Fried egg butty comes to mind unless the world chicken overlord society needs to have it as a museum piece :)

Actually I don't think double yolkers will hatch twins or single chicks. at least i've never heard them reported from a credible source.

Whoo Hoo
I haven't had a double yolker from my girls yet, but I know its not something you would want to happen too often, As they are using up their egg numbers but there is something exciting about it happening occassionally  :D

I don't think egg numbers is a issue but passing very large eggs can run the risk of a prolapse which is usually a very difficult condition to deal with and is often fatal.  Also egg binding can occur too.  That's what happened with one of my Black Rocks which used to lay double yolkers and that proved fatal too.

However in most hens it's just a passing phase.

Our Speckldy lays a double yolker every week, it's very obvious and everyone fights over who gets it ::)

True, HF.  Double yolkers certainly wouldn't be recommended for hatching.  But it's the same concept as fraternal twins in humans - two ova are released at the same time and travel through the reproductive system together.

I remember the excitement of double-yolker eggs as a child.  I must ask Mum where we got our eggs from as I'm pretty sure we used to get them occasionally in store-bought eggs.  Maybe it was just the 'good old days' before all produce had to be exactly uniform.
