Problem with Jacks foot - splinter?
« on: December 11, 2008, 18:16 »
Hi All

Jack has had a limp on & off for a while - all examinations failed to spot anything amiss    :(
Mornings he's fine but some days as the day goes on it  gets worst.

Tonight he was sitting down alot, so in he came and after a complete scrub up of said foot I have found what a think is a deep splinter :(
Removed it as best I could whilst he pooped on me & wriggled

Here is my quandary : Do I keep him in for a few days & hope the rest helps? I don't like separating??
Or do I restrict all of them for a day or two & see how he goes??

Here's a quick video taken tonight - what strikes me is he's not putting his heal down yet the splinter was more towards his middle toe :?

Any thoughts, muchly appreciated :D

Sarah :)

Looks very painful by the way he's limping Sarah  :(

Any broken bones ?

Any sign of bumblefoot ?

Any swelling ?

germolene !!  :)

Is there an open wound or was it a clean pull out of the foot ?

Could it have nicked a tendon ?

They are pretty hardy things I think. That's what everyone used to tell me anyway   :)

Could you upend him and get a photo ? (in the morning).

He certainly looks sore. I don't know anything about ducks but just wonder if it may have become infected, salt water is always good, vets always seem to recommend it (not too strong though). Maybe the wound justs needs more time to feel as though the splinter has gone.

And of course, being a boy, he's a lot more mardy than the others. Do you think he's after a soft bed for the night ?

There's no swelling at all, no broken bones apart from the dark line of the splinter there's nothing obvious :(

I have put my hand against the flat of his foot and he has with both feet curled his toes around my fingers and pushed into me, though not as powerfully with the bad one.

I have put germolene on Rob as I had to open the skin up to remove the splinter - it had obviously been there a bit

What really puzzles me is some days no sign of the limp then other days he's fine in the morning and gradually over the day it becomes noticeable :?

Do you think he could have twisted it at some stage then every so often just aggravates it?
They do have a habit of going up the rocks

They're daft enough.

It'll be the sound of the Atlantic breakers tempting them. Spot of surfing. :)

Could be what Aunt Sally suggested, bumblefoot or the ducky equivalent. No idea what you can do other than restrict playtime.

Ow.

He looks really sore! Can you limit him with Jill and Titch ti a smaller area so he can get a bit of rest? Just know how much Patrick hated being separated from the others and he might be a bit calmer with the others.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Could be an little infection that has been introduced through the splinter, that would explain why it gets sore later on when he has been walking on it. I wonder if a course of antibiotics and an inflammatory injection would make him feel more comfortable? particulary if the splinter went in quite deep.? :D

Piccie of foot, area where I got the splinter out from is circled.

I'll see how he is the morning with a limited area, then maybe a trip to a vet see if I can get any antib's & injection.
I would have thought with an infection it would feel warm though???
Ducks hey who'd have 'em

Thanks everyone :D

So sorry to hear about poor little Jack's foot, Sarah.  Hope it gets better soon and that he's just being a typical man playing on it.  x

hmmm thats quite a small wound! I think HappyChick may have a point! :D
I am guessing that ducks dont have a great blood supply so maybe wouldnt feel warm with an infection? Just a thought though.
Gorgeous duck!

I'm always surprised how warm my ducks feet are! That being said really didn't bleed very much when the fox punctured Patrick's webbing.
Surprising how much he is limping given the tiny wound and the fact it all looks otherwise healthy.

Looks sore. I havent got a clue, I normally come to you for help but it could just be really sore and he is being a typical man.

Hope so. Let us know how he gets on.

I read somewhere that they have a special warming circuit for their feet.

I'll try and find a link.
