When to net carrots?
« on: June 05, 2010, 08:54 »
When should I net carrots? Straight away after sowing seed or wait til I can see some green? Also, can I just lay the netting over the carrots or do I need to make a frame so the netting doesn't touch the carrots - like my brassica netting?

I wait until you see green, hoe then net. You'll need to support, especially if using heavy debris netting.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hmmm .... is Debris netting "fine" enough for Carrot fly?

I had assumed that Carrot and Onion fly needed Enviromesh, and Cabbage White Butterfly, Pigeons [;)] etc would be deterred by Debris netting

Happy to be proven wrong though as Enviromesh is a lot more expensive ...

I use enviromesh, but I've noticed that others on here have used debris netting with good effect.

Saturday I fleeced my 2 rows of carrots, they had just come through and I hand weeded the rows before fleecing

Like others I wait to see the carrots emerge, hoe and then cover. Initially there is no need to support the fleece or enviromesh at all. When the carrots are 2 inches high I then build a proper tent.
