Duck advice
« on: October 06, 2009, 23:41 »
My wife came home  2 nights ago with a duck that she had found wandering next to a busy road, it's partner had fallen victim to a car.

I have looked up some pictures and i think it is a campbell (colour is a mix of fawn and white)
It is a domesticated duck as it's wings have been clipped.

As we were talking about keeping chickens in the near future I decided to keep the duck (although I will be watching the local papers lost and found sections to try and reunite it with it's rightful owner)

If i can't find it's owner should I get it another partner/s or will it be fine on it's own.

Also if it is best to get a partner/s for it what age duck should i get (this one seems to be normal adult duck size)

Any help/advice greatly appreciated

Hi neil. Yes, they need at least one partner. If it's a drake, you may need to get 2 or 3 females. If a female, another female will do.

I think any fully grown duck will suffice.

Do you have a suitable house/run/feed, etc ?

Thanks for the reply Rob.

After reading a few articles on the web i'm 70 - 80% certain the duck is female - loud quack straight tail feathers.

Luckily we have a rabbit hutch and run to use temporarily until i can build a more suitable pen.

The local pet store advised us on the feed (pellet and grain).

They told my wife that we did not need to buy any grit for the duck but i've read on some web sites that the duck needs grit to help with digestion. so again left confused.
