Title: Mealy melons
Post by: Hortic on August 24, 2023, 12:54
Hi everybody. I've had a mixed year with my 'Emir' melons. There was good fruit set when it was hot and sunny in the spring. Then it got colder,  wet and cloudy and most of the fruit dropped leaving me with only two fruits. I've watched and fussed and waited for the first to ripen.
On a Monday the fruit wasn't ready, still green and lacking fragrance. Three days later it was ripe, golden and the smell made my mouth water. I picked to the envy of my allotment neighbours.
But when I got it home I found the melon had a mealy texture and no flavour what so ever. It appeared over ripe but I'm confused how this could have happened in such a short time.

So melon growers of the UK! What's happened here? And should I harvest my remaining melon early, will it ripen at home?
