Birth defects how to correct
« on: March 07, 2011, 11:54 »
Please help, I have just hatched some chicks and one has a dodgy leg as it hatched a little late, I have been told there is a way I can tie to the other leg and hopefully correct, does anyone know?

If it's splay leg it's not really a birth defect, it's an incubator defect which needs to be sorted before you hatch any more chicks. The incubator floor needs to be non slip. I place a rubber tray mat, cut to size, in my incubator just before hatching. This ensures that the chicks have a firm footing when they try to stand.

That is a good link from Joyfull but I would say it is slightly 'undercorrecting'. The legs need to be taped so that they are vertical, they are still slightly splayed in those pics.
