Incubation and rearing. Correct me if I am wrong.
I have Katie Thear's Book. Which I have skimmed.
- 1: If I get an automatic turning incubator I just have only check it twice a day.
- 2: It will take 21 days ish for chicken eggs hatch.
- 3: It will take a further 4 weeks is (depending on outside temp) till they can out
- 4: Once the eggs have hatched. Keep em warm check temp and increase hight/reduce heat over 4 weeks.
- 5: I do not realy have to do to much else to them apart from check twice a day (and fead and water).
- 6: I could keep them in a windowless garage for the first 4 weeks as long as they have heat and light in the daytime.
- 7: I can mix the age of my birds (age range two weeks max)
What incubator would you suggest and from where?
Edited
Er what I meant was am I correct at all the points 1-7? I just want to be sure. You know I am paranoid unless I am sure.
-
No idea. :(
Are you ready for the excessive cockerals ?
ie. giveaway or stewpot.
ROb
-
sorry Rough, only know about the manuel turning ones, we tend to be a bit controversial and it's worked for us so far
-
.................
Are you ready for the excessive cockerals ?
ie. giveaway or stewpot.
I hope to give away. Apart from one Scots Grey.
-
Yes that is pretty much correct. 45% humidity for the first 17 days and then boost it to 65% for the hatch. I take the turner out on the 18th day and place the eggs in an egg carton for the hatch too, makes clean up easier.
And it is best to use a red light in the brooder, holds down picking.
-
Hi Rough
In a round about way that's everything :D
I tend to leave mine till 6-8 weeks before going out but if we have a good day obviously they go out in the VERY secure rabbit run, magpies, crows as well as seagulls all fly around looking for the chance of an easy meal :(
I have a very tiny 3 egg incy the Rcom3 - suits me as it limits me in hatching (other wise I'd be over run ) It does everything for you but I do Top & Tail turn the eggs 3 times as the turner only does side to side. OH ye an keep it topped up with water
I got it from http://www.flytesofancy.co.uk/chickenhouses/Incubators-Brooders.html
Good delivery etc...
Hope that helps
Sarah :)
-
OMG I have gone and done it. Ordered a Incubator.
OH F
Sent out emails about Scots Grey hatching eggs.
Rang about Dorking and Cream Legbar.
Eggciting and scary.
Does anyone know of a good manicurist or where I can purchase nail bite by the gallon?

Oh boy Ruff you are trouble now!! lots of chick pics dont forget! :D :D
-
No worries I also love chick pics.
Just wait for the paranoia Foxy.
I can feel it welling up inside.
You know what I was like when I first got chickens.
-
lmao...i thought i was bad enough getting one that did 10!!! but 20!!!!
I was told today, (an old wives tale).....that if you hatch chicks earlier in the year you tend to get more females, and later in the year you get more males!
anyone heard this one?
-
My thought is you dont have to fill it. Hope the old wives tale is true.
-
If this is your parade.
I'll rain on it. ::)
Random.
Life can be cruel at times. :(

So where is this parade?
Do they have a marching band?
And last but not least what is it you have been drinking and can I have a pint of it please.

I've been drinking the water of life. The milk of human kindness. The ale of contentment.
Oh, alright. Tea.
Rob 8)
-
Oh just tea OK.
Well it is Friday for me so ale time.
Yipppee
-
Is this incy for repopulating your new run or in addition to ??
-
Re-population. Now all I have to do is find the eggs.
Ooooo can not wait.
-
u are so lucky :( :( i gotta wait before i can think about getting an incubator .
-
karlooben I am not lucky as I lost my last lot of girls to Mr Raynard. But every cloud.
-
*counts herself as very lucky for having a wonderful Dad that bought me my incy!*
-
two fingers in chooknewbie's general direction.

** Thanks his stars that he hasn't got an incy cos it's TOO FLAMIN STRESSFUL!!! **

Hi Roughlee Handled,
I am curious.... if you have a refernce book in your mitts, why did you only skim through it? Re-read to be sure is my offering.
cathangirl
-
Thanks cathangirl good advice. But I would much rather skim and ask the all knowing ones that I have it correct. Saves more time for chucks. :tongue2:
-
It's no good, I'm going to have to order some more eggs for my incy. Thank goodness it only takes 10. The orp babies went to their new homes yesterday so I'm feeling bereft of chicks. OK they were between 20 and 16 weeks old and getting very large but all the same they were my babies :D I fancy some cream legbars for the blue eggs or some derbyshire redcaps. What do you think? Or some more silkies or.....
-
LMAO Roughlee...now thats not very friendly is it!! :tongue2:
-
.............I fancy some cream legbars for the blue eggs or some derbyshire redcaps. What do you think? Or some more silkies or.....
derbyshire redcaps as they are a endangered breed. LMAO Roughlee...now thats not very friendly is it!! :tongue2:
Wots not friendly? Me confuesed.
-
two fingers in chooknewbie's general direction.
that bit wasnt very friendly...*L*.. just cos I got a lovely daddy that bought me an incy.... :D :D ;)
-
OK sorry :(
-
oh dont be so soft...i am pullin yer leg..lol :tongue2:
-
And I yours ;)
-

-
I've succumbed and order 6 cream legbar eggs :) Haven't told OH yet... Maybe later
-
And how many will that bring your total to?
-
Well seeing as the orpies have gone to their new home, if they all hatch the total will be 16. I liked the idea of blue eggs and auto sexing (I'm still not 100% sure of the orp's but I think there's 3 girls and 2 boys).
-
I like the idea of auto sexing and that is why I have gone for mainly Scots Grey as they supposedly can be auto sexed. But I am wanting two cream legbars just for the blue eggs.
-
Ok stampy feet time.
The supplier of my incy can not confirm when I will be receiving it.
It is coming direct from the importer.
But
but
BUt I
I
I
WANT IT NOW. YES NOW.
WANT
WANT
WANT
:(
(STAMPING FEET)
-
;)
SPITTING DUMMY AND THEN THROWING IT FAR FAR OUT OF THE PRAM.
-
You got a problem with the incy Rough ???
Didn't quite catch that ???
Patience is a virtue so I'm told, good things come to those who wait. I'm sure there are more
I'd be exactly the same
Maybe it someone's way of saying you should have gone for a smaller one ???
-
It better not be. I have been haveing quiet (in head talks ) with that person/being/allknowing one. Where is me ffffffing incy.
I want it now so I can order me eggs then then then chucks.
-
Got the legbar eggs this morning, they are settling now. Oh and I ordered some silver laced wyandottes to fill the incy up. Sorry Rough
-
Two fingers in raeburg's general direction.
-
aww Ruff! Can you change suppliers? or incy perhaps?
Anyway what hatching eggies were you getting? I know you posted it somewhere.
I hope to have enough to pop in the incky this weekend, fingers crossed!
-
I am going to go for Scotts Grey. Several Reasons.
One they are on the endangered list http://www.rbst.org.uk/watch-list/poultry (http://www.rbst.org.uk/watch-list/poultry)
I have read that you can Auto sex at a day old!!!
Breed | Hen | Cock |
Scots Grey | 4 | 1 |
Cream Legbar | 2 | |
Silver Grey Dorking | 2 | |
Welsummer | 2 | |
Total | 10 | 1 |
But I may scratch the Welsummer for a Buff/Black Orpy cross as the lady up the road that is looking after my one remaining chuck has some Orpys (buff) with a Black Cockerel. Who knows. Scratched the Silver sussex.
I am trying to get the Scots Grey eggs I am going to try to get eggs from at least two (but pref 3 suppliers). I am going to give away unwanted cocks and sell for not allot the birds. Aim is to have a cock with two pairs of unrelated females and the pairs unrelated to the cock. Then a bit of breeding. :D
That is the dream.
In the mean time I am thinking of getting a first batch of Cream Legbars and Dorkings. Breed and give away cocks sell the birds but keep two of each.
-
That is a very fine list!!! :D
Wouldn't mind some Scots greys myself......
-
Well I could give you a trio. I am sure I will have some soooon.
-
and me.......... and me.................
-
Yes you too TMG
-
Just about to fill up the incy... Sorry to rub it in Rough :tongue2:
Sorry you've got problems sourcing yours. I'm seriously tempted to get another larger one, but I know I'd never stop and be over run with chickens :D
-
I see you found the new table buttons Ruff :D
-
I see you found the new table buttons Ruff :D
Yes but they do take a little effort.
-
It has arrived.
Now I have to
1. Purchase incubator sanitiser.
2. Tell the OH that the Incy has to be in the house for 21days not in the garage as the temp fluctuates to much. (OMG THAT IS GONNA BE A ARGUMENT)
3. Decide what eggs to go for initially. 6 Scotts Grey and 6 Cream Legbar or the Dorking?
4. Purchase the eggs.
oooooh eggcited.
-
Yay :D
Really pleased for you Rough :)
Will Kate really be worried about the Incy being in the house?
Would have thought you'd have more problems when they hatch, they're so tiny and cute.
You won't be able to bring yourself to put them outside, there will be poops everywhere
Sarah :D
-
It will be the cluttering up the house/"my territory" thing.
Garage YOUR TERRITORY.
-
And you know what the guy that was on ebay his listing has run out and I can not find him
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrg
He was the only one on there for scots grey hatching eggs.
-
i'm sure you'll find him, and Rough! your the only person on here that has actually posted a pic of an empty incubator...........
-
Ok found another advert on ebay for Scots Grey Hatching eggs. Guess what its advertised as ScotsGrey not Scots Grey. Anywho bought and paid for.
