ok to put freesias in now?
« on: April 03, 2012, 14:09 »
Wondering if its now mild enough to plant my freesia bulbs? I'm in south Essex so there shouldn't be much frost if any from now? I can stick them in a cold frame to be safe. Also do i need to lift them before the first frost in autumn?

Freesias tend to be fairly hardy. My Dad grew them for years (He lived in Portsmouth) and never dug them up, but left the leaves to die down on their own at the end of the year.

It would be fine to plant them out now  :)

I planted some corms in pots well over a month since, but nothing is showing yet. Is this normal?

They grow roots during the winter/early spring, followed by shoots.

(You did plant them pointy-end up? )

Followed the instructions on the packet like a good little boy, which was to plant from February onwards. (Wilko corms). Pointy end up? Oh yes! Being an inquisitive sort of a lad, I had a butchers at one ot the pots this aft. Nice set of roots forming, so I reckon they should flower this year. (like it said on the packet). :)

I had the Wilkinsons freesia's last year and they were brilliant.  Grew well, looked good and after just leaving them in the pots are shooting again.  Got some more this year along with some double flowering freesia's.  Shame they don't smell like some freesias do though, vaguely remember reading that the hardy freesia don't smell, but could be talking rubbish.  Their bulbs/corms are excellant.
