soaking labels off used bottles
« on: September 28, 2009, 20:29 »
I'm soaking a dozen used wine bottles in the sink with warm water+washing up liquid.

ANy tips on making the labels come off easier ?

Some have peeled off easily and others are proving more tricky.

Once the top layer of paper has come off I scrub the area with a nylon pan scourer  :)

I use a blunt knife  ::)

It's a bit like stripping wall paper :D...sometimes if you score the labels a bit the water seems to soak through a bit easier

A tiny amount of white spirit gets rid of the really gooey ones.  Then a hot wash to get rid of the smell.  Glass is impermeable so it doesn't linger.
Cheese makes everything better.

Thanks all. I was hoping there was some secret ingredient to add to the warm water that would make the labels drop off  :D

Out with the scourer and white spirit it is then  ::)

Will try some boiling water first though. Need to rinse and sterilise yet. That'll wait til tomorrow. Be nice to forget about it for a year or two.

Hmm what I do it throw them away as I cannot be bothered with anything more complex that a quick soak. We go through enough bottles to get easy peel labels :D
