Water but pump (a simple question.)
« on: August 25, 2009, 16:13 »
My water buts are a long way from where I want to use them so I was wondering when they are on are they constantly pumping or if they reach pressure do they turn them selves off or am I going to have to convert my wellies to running shoes. Water Buts are slightly lower than the point I want to water at.

Siphons are handy
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

totally agree with Ice.
you could get a nasty shock.

If the pumps dont have a pressure sensitive cut out on them, you can get one from northern tools (usually fitted to sprayers). all you would need then is a battery/power pack. :)

OH I know I googled Water Butts last year and mixed in with the results I got something to do with plugs.  I will not tell you what I got when I googled "swallow" (the bird).  Thanks for the advice.

Ok after a bit more research I have found that it is going to be far to costly for a flow control unit.
http://www.pipeandfittings.co.uk/presscontrol_and_controlpress.html

£52!!!
This pressure switch also has to have a min of 1-2 bar of pressure witch also means better pump and more cost.
So I think I will have to waste some water and turn my tap on and run.

Gwiz I could not find anything you mentioned, thanks for the elp though.

Don't know how much they cost, but you could put a cheap relief valve after the pump, allowing water to return to butt when hose is closed.

It sounds like you are still looking to design/build this system.  Is that correct?

If you have not yet got the pump, then just make sure you get a pump with a built-in pressure switch.  The pressure switch does not add much to the cost of the pump.

I might be tripping, but that's never stopped me before ;)

We use a pond pump with our water butt when feeding the plants, we just slap a normal hosepipe onto it, turn it on and then meander ( I don't do "dash" ) to the far end, point it at the relevant plant and pull the trigger.

thinking about raising one water butt high-ish up, then have a poxy solar pump fill it from the lower ones, and then overflow back.  I figure if the high water butt is "always" full I'll get enough pressure?
