Making Lager From Youngs Kit
« on: May 01, 2009, 11:38 »
Hi,

My first ever post...Whoop

And its a question (sorry) I have just started my adventure into making my own beer and i have started with a kit from Youngs. It is a lager kit and i have got to the stage where the lager is now fermenting in the bucket.

My question is about how long to leave this fermenting. It says on the instructions pack that i should leave it until the bubbles have stopped rising or the hydrometer has read the same reading for 3 days in a row. It says it will take 4-6 days.

Well I think the bubbles are still rising after 8 days and my hydrometer isn't reading below 1,006 as i thought it should. I haven't had a constant reading either.

I am at a bit of a loss, not really sure if i am doing it right at the moment and i don't want to make a mess of my first shot it it.

Can anyone suggest any pointers, has anyone ever had a go at these kits before?

Thanks
MP

Been doing my own since October last year.  I usually wait about 10 days before bottling mine sometimes you do get the odd bubble coming to the surface.

The last kit I did which was a couple of weeks ago was bottled on day 8.

As long as everthing is steralized thoroughly you can't go wrong

Just seen the advert at the top for brew it yourself if you go to there there is a very good forum.  I'm on that forum also

All the best

the length of time for fermentation depends of the temperature.. so can take longer than they say. Mine if often 7-10 days and the kitchen is about 20C.
