When is best to take cuttings from lilac shrubs/trees?

I want to plan tome in my allotment (I'm going to have some flower beds) and my best friends mum as a beautiful lilac tree in her garden, which I'd eally like to get a cutting from.

Also any tips on cutting would be marvelous, thank you!
