Bob deals with veg in all his books. The 2 I like best (can't decided which 1 is better as they're both good) are The Organic Gardener and the No Work Garden. If anything, I'd say the latter is the best for veg growing and how to reuse pernicious roots as feed. The Organic Gardener shows his place, how its set up and what he uses (an old chest freezer to store fruit) himself, along with good pix of weeds, etc. Best to have a good look through at a book store and decide for yourself.

But if you buy it from John you get a signed copy and I bet John makes more money if he sells them directly. Authors get a raw deal as it is so buying direct from them at least allows them to make a little more

I don't mind really

Truth is that you get a signed copy direct from me - sent by first class post usually the same day you order (if before 4pm)

The large online retailers buy in large quantities and have postal contracts etc so really I can't compete on their terms. Although I wrote the book, I don't get it for free. My profit per direct sale is just over a pound.

If you buy elsewhere, I still get a royalty and I heard that if you borrow it from a library I get 5p (!!)

Anyway, must dash as the Rolls Royce rep is coming around to show me their new rotovator. I wish.
Check out our books - ideal presents

Thanks Chappers - I just PMd you as I saw the order pop through.

One point I would make, is I think the removal of retail price maintenance on books (when they had to be sold at the list price by law) was a bad move for the book industry and consumers as a whole.

It's killed hundreds of small high street shops, some great and some not so but individual and unique. The other effect is to skew the market. If you're in the top 20 then your sales are huge but the also rans don't get much at all.

Hopefully the technological improvements mean that 'print on demand' and short runs will enable specialist and quirky authors to get a better look in.

I considered an e-book. The economics are interesting - if I sold the book online, my costs would be zero effectively but yours would be the cost of printing out 256 pages. At 2p a sheet that's about the same as the book.

However, I don't think that's as convenient by a long chalk as a properly bound and covered book.

Also, the publisher paid for the illustrations and the editor (she was wonderful even if I did begin to dread her emails) and they promote it to those big online stores.

its a no win situation.

i think authors deserve to get the cover price, but also as an avid reader, on average one a week, i do like that i can pick up 2 for £7 in the supermarkets, as against £6.99 each.

but well done chappers, that autograph is going to be worth erm loads in the future

Well it would be nice to get the cover price - but in theory I get my royalties for ever so if sales tick over for 10 years I've a small pension coming in. Now if I had say 10 books....

Trouble is that I've said what I wanted to on growing vegetables. I suspect some of the big gardening authors struggle for something new to say and basically re-hash (with pretty pictures) what they said before.

I'm working on another book idea though - it's very early and I'm seeing if the idea will make a book first. No, I'm not saying what in public yet! Let me see if it will work first :)

I would just like to say thank you to all who have helped me to decide what books to get with my vouchers.  I'd better not get John's book at WHSmith or else I'll get into trouble like poor Chappers     I'll have to order it when I get paid instead, the extra pound will be worth it because when John becomes rich and famous the book will be worth millions

Thanks again
