First Earlies
« on: January 31, 2018, 10:30 »
I normally only grow main crop potatoes on the plot but this year I have decided to plant some first earlies in the PT and to grow a small bed of them outside.  I will be putting them in the PT in early feb but I am not sure when or where to put them in the plot.  Ideally I would like to follow them on with hardy annual cut flowers which I will be growing in modules but if they aren’t going to be out in time then I will put them in the bed that is assigned for leeks.  When should I sow them and roughly when would they be due out.

Plant the seed potatoes in mid March and lift end of May beginning of June - depending on weather/variety.
I always follow my earlies with leeks  :)

Same here.. I was typing at the same time and my post seems to have evaporated

If you keep your leeks well fed they don't mind waiting until those potatoes are out, and then use your "leek" bed to get the flowers off to a good start

I don't grow maincrop anymore because they are cheap in the shops. Also Maris Piper and similar chipping spuds don't grow well on my site for some reason. Never had a good crop of Maris Piper but always cracking Pink Fir, Charlotte and the like.

Going to put them in the leek bed.  My main crop were poor last year so will see how first earlies go this year.
