I know camellias can be quite fickle but is it possible to move a camellia from one part of the garden to another? It has been in the ground for about 10 years now but is not huge.  It is hidden behind a whole pile of other shrubs and I thought it might be better moved to a spot where it can be seen.  Also, if possible to move what is the best time, presumably after it has finished flowering?

We moved one twice. The first time from house to house, the second time from a position against (almost) a fence, to further along the fence.
The first move was in the February '92 the second in July '99
I didn't do anything in particular except dig a large hole fill with ericaceous compost & re-plant.
It had plenty of water every day for weeks & the second move took a lot longer to re establish & I thought I'd killed it but it survived.
The height of Summer wasn't an ideal time for moving it but I was building an extension & it would have been wrecked anyway.
It died quite suddenly a couple of years ago, I'm not sure what from, it just went brown & that was the end of it.
It was against a north facing fence so got hardly any sun.

I think the key is plenty of water.

Thanks for this, it probably will be autumn by the time I get round to doing it.  Think I will have a go as we cannot see it where it is anyway!

Which of course makes sense, because moving them now would risk the leaves' transpiration being faster than the roots could take up water as the weather warms up
