Lawn Turf Pest
« on: February 10, 2016, 19:26 »
Recently assisted local Scout association to lay some Turf , it all died we have received some more to lay but I am concerned by the number of grubs in the turf .
Can anyone help to identify these grubs?

I initially thought they might be leatherjacket grubs or chafer grubs, but I'm not certain about this as the colour of the grubs in your photos doesn't seem to match.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

They do look like leatherjackets maybe younger and not coloured up.

I would be on to the turf company asap !
Far too many pests to pay for !

Contacted Turf company today and they say it is a Sever Larvae of the Hawthorn fly .
The turf was apparently treated to kill it two days before delivery but will take two weeks for them to die .
So today we continued laying it.
We laid over 200 sq metres last autumn which has all died , turf company providing seed to repair.
Has anyone else had turf laid where they have been advised to treat for pest twice a year , looking like some form of Nematode required.

Interesting , i have seen big hatches of Hawthorn flies when fishing but did not know where they came from !

The only chance they would have of selling that turf to me would be if i was buying bait !

I wonder how selective and effective the treatment is to need retreatment ?

I'd tell the turf company you don't want it and to come and take it away. I did that when I received some that was 50% weeds. They gave me a full refund and asked if I would dispose of it as it was too expensive for them to collect. It made lovely compost.
