The only ones I could find via Goggle used rice syrup they were American sites so where you would get it in the UK is anyones guess.

do you mean saki/rice wine?

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/rice+beer says they are the same. Rice is used as an additive when making some light beers - like sugar, all it imparts is sugar for the yeast to work on, and that's it.

Thanks for your replies.

I should confess that I am only looking to brew something for my slug pubs so the end result needn't be palatable to humans, e.g. Budweiser who also use some rice in their recipe!

I had loads of rice in the house so threw together a 4 gallon brew with some rice, sugar and bread yeast.  I will report later as to whether the slugs prefer it to Budwater.

Some early success with my Slugweiser recipe; put some in a slug pub overnight less than 36 hours after starting the fermentation and have a couple sleeping it off in there this morning.

Large scale trials will follow soon but here is what I did in case anyone wants to try.

WG's Slugweiser recipe
1kg rice
2.5kg sugar
yeast

Boil rice.  Put into fermentation bucket with sugar.  Add boiling water to dissolve.  Top up to about 20 litres.  Add yeast when liquid cools.  Total cost about £2.40

It would probably work even without the rice and with less sugar so I'll give that a try at a later date.

P.S. Thanks for the cartoons MJ - only you would have a appropriate ones for a subject like this

Slug pubs.

Cut slots into the side of a plastic milk bottle.  About 2" from bottom and maybe 3" long.  Leave top side of slot intact & fold upwards to keep rain out.

Put 1" of 'beer' into the bottle and place around garden.  Slugs go in & drown.
