my sister and boyfriend made ginger beer but when they opened the first bottle it exploded, the next bottle he opened naked in the shower (sensible i suppose) and again it went bang, does anyone know either what they did wrong or a less dangerous recipe!

Others will know more than me, but was it stored in the fridge for a few days before opening?

Too much sugar and/or too long in the bottle. If you want to keep ginger beer for longer, then you need to let off the pressure every few days. Chilling before opening will help a little.

Make it in a plastic bottle and feel it every day to make sure it isn't feeling too hard, ease the lid off when it does.

We made our first lot a few years ago in grolsh bottles,they could only be opened out doors and after opening the contents shot acroos the lawn but left almost nothing in the bottle.So plastic tonic bottles are now used and opened with caution,
