Title: My dog Honey
Post by: Bizzi Lizzi on July 29, 2010, 11:50
My poor little Honey.  It looks like she could have thyroid cancer.  Have taken her to the vets this morning for an operation to remove the lump so fingers crossed that it is a success.

Spend an hour in the local park with my other dog and my daughter having a picnic putting the world to rights, got back to the car and the b****y thing wouldn't start!  Got it going on the fourth attempt, got home and now a nice man from the RAC is operating on her too.

Oh, did I mention that my pet insurance might not cover the cost of Honey's treatment?  At the last count we were on £950!  Had to cancel next years holiday.

On the up side ... mother-in-law not now coming to us for Christmas!!!!

Hey, my life in a nutshell.

Thanks everyone for your kind wishes so far.

I really feel for you - we had a Honey dog - a golden labby - she had thyroid problems for years and was on constant medication, cost a fortune but you just can't let them go, can you?

Interestingly her medication said on the packet " whilst taking this medication avoid driving and alcohol"

This made Honey very annoyed - she was not tall enough to be able to read the bus timetable, so she constantly missed the bus, she didn't want to relinquish her evening sherry and her day was only saved by the knowledge that her  afterdinner cigar was not on the banned list!

Let's hope your Honey sticks with it - good luck and giver her a hug from me

Oh Lizzie, I hope she will be ok.

Our little Ellie has cost us about £600 so far and none of that is reclaimable as it was all routine maintenence stuff but seeing her face yesterday when she got home from the vets and realised she was home was worth ever penny.

Fingers crossed for you.

Was hoping you'd post something about Honey, was afraid to ask just in case.

We had to have our cat put to sleep earlier this year so good to hear its not come that.
Don't know why we have insurance they seem to spend most of their time trying to duck any claims   Anyhow hope things go better for you in the future :)

The very latest news is that the growth was very self-contained, good news, but some may have already spread to her lungs but time will tell.  The vet is optimistic.

Thank you again for all your best wishes.  Will keep you posted.

Several years ago after xrays it was discovered that one of our beautiful cats had a tumour in the bladder.   She had been in the vets over night and I went in to see her in the morning before they did an exploratory op.  Talking to the vet I realised that it was very bad news and said, in sheer desperation , 'Why do we have these animals?'   His answer, 'Because of the pleasure they give us while we have them,'... 'and the ultimate reward we can give them is to let them go when their life is no longer a joy to them and to us.'  I tend to cling on to this when I have to say goodbye to yet another beloved pet.

I do hope the news is good.

Her name was Honey too.

I am an animal nutter, not stupid in their management, but will defend them and their rights to the very end.  I warn you this is not a brief story.

I have a little dog who, through no fault of her own, had three owners in fifteen months before she reached me.  The man who had her parents was going to drown her and her brother because it was an unplanned pregnancy.  I know the b.....d, he lives just up the road from me.  She is a Pomeranian x JR, looks mostly Pom and very pretty.  Someone else I know heard and took the two dogs.  Kept the little girl and homed the boy.  When the pup was about six months old, allegedly she snapped at the grand daughter, as I said to my vet, 'What was the kid doing'?  Person passed her on to someone who calls herself a model, (?) and thought pup was a nice little fashion accessory.  After a few months skint unable to buy food for the dog, plus got fed up with the commitment, plus awful live in boyfriend who cleared off, in desperation she rang my daughter and asked (knowing me and my ideas) if I would take the dog.  I rang girl back and asked about temperament etc., we had four other dogs at the time plus four cats, rabbit and two horses (no money ).  I agreed to take her on the understanding that the girl would have to take me to court but she would never ever get her back.   Incidentally, now she is a nice litle dog the first owner suggested, once, she might consider having her back.  Not a snowballs chance in hell. :tongue2:.

She is a gorgeous little dog, does motoring, the allotment, horses but she is very wary of people and hates men.  She is food obsessed and very nervous, but she knows she's safe and is totally devoted to myself and my daughter.  Two of our other dogs are rescued, plus all the cats and one pony.  As I said I'm a nutter.

What wonderful stories and comments about everyone's animals.

All my cats and dogs have been other people's cast-offs, but everyone has been loved and well cared for, Honey being the latest!

She's doing much better today, a bit whiney but hey, she's a girl!  The long scar down her neck looks a little angry but she's on pain killers and anti-biotics and sees the vet again on Monday.  Whatever happens she has had a good and loving life with me and my family, something the previous "owners" weren't prepared to give her.

Will post photos soon.

, Don't no how people can give em up
Neither do I.  Can you imagine what they must feel?    What do they think?  They must wonder what they've done and what's happening.   My daughter bought a young horse, 2 year old, about 7 weeks ago, a mare, seems highly intelligent, and after a very tentative start, wanting to please and trying to do things right,  she now follows my daughter everywhere and wants to be close to her when she's at the yard.  She went from breeder at 1 yo to a girl who had her for a year then sold her on to my daughter.   I get the impression she does everything to please in case she gets moved on again.  No chance.

Took Honey back to the vets yesterday and is a bit concerned that the wound isn't healing very well and weeping quite a bit.  She's also irritated the surrounding skin very badly.  It looks awful.  Bathing the wound and also applying steroid cream to the surrounding area.  Have spent four out of five nights on the floor with her and my lovely daughter did the fifth.  Haven't been anywhere, just been by her side.

She's quite chipper considering and certainly not off her food (hence the nickname "Fatlass") but it's going to be a long process.

Back to the vets tomorrow for another check up.

Was chatting at work about her and two of my colleagues said that they would have had her put down.  These so-called animal lovers also keep dogs.  It's cost me a fortune, we've cancelled our holidays, we're tied in, we're tired and a bit mis but I wouldn't ever consider not giving her a chance of life - have I got this wrong?

Exactly my thoughts, it's very easy to say when it's someone else's dog. You know your own dog best and it's nobody else's business.

Sending positive healing thoughts Honey's way.

It sounds as if I'm going a bit OTT over my dogs but two years ago I found my mother dead, my aunt died of terminal cancer three months later and my Downs Syndrome uncle was put into care by my two remaining aunts - all three lived with me, my husband and my daughter and I was their sole carer.  Since this time I've had the very loneliest and deeply depressing of times and my dogs are my constant companions and have heard me scream, cry and laugh.  They listen to my rantings and follow me everywhere including into the garden, my other great love, so I feel that I owe them as much loyalty as they have shown me.

Sounds so depressing and yes it has been but we're getting there and I've still got a sense of humour!!!

my dogs are great listeners, they help get me through tough times as well. Nobody on here feels you are OTT with your dogs care, whilst so-ever the vets say there is hope like you I would keep ploughing on.
Honey hopefully will be fine she just needs a little bit of time and tlc to fight off the infection that she probably has in the scar area.

In my opinion you can never be OTT about pets.
Jake was a rescue and hopefuly we have given him a good life after his bad first years.

No sleep for several nights watching over Ellie after her op and then nursing Jake. It is worse than having kids but there is no way I wouldn't do it.

Really hope Honey continues to get better.

Have been cleaning with salted aired water and putting the steroid cream around and there is certainly a big improvement.  The wound is weeping just a little still but she's never still.

I put her a rather fetching neckerchief on this morning but she spent more time trying to get it off then scratching the wound so that was abandoned.  She obviously thought the fashion police were on their way!
Title: Re: My dog Honey

Served as diversionary tactic, while she worries at the neckerchief she wasn't worrying the wound - so it was a Good Thing!   :D

This thread has made me both laugh and cry, and has also brough back memories of when I took my cat Phoebe to the vets with a sore spot on her neck that wouldnt heal. I thought that at worst it was an abcess, and was just expecting the vet to give her a jab, some pills and send us home.
However, she dropped the bombshell that she though it was cancer, and that she wanted to operate as soon as possible. She kept Phoebe in that night..coming home without her was awful, and having to tell hubby and the other two moggies was terrible. She had her operation the following morning, and I opted to have the growth sent to the lab to see if it was malignant or not. Phoebe came through the op well, and they also checked all her other internal organs for any signs of tumours. The pathology came back that it had been malignant, but the vet was hopeful that she had got it all. Now, 2 years on, I watch Phoebe like a hawk for any changes.
Luckily the vets bill, including operation, 4 subsequent visits for jabs, stitches, cleaning etc, pathology, blood tests, came to 147€ (probably about £120)which I didnt think was too bad. Money didnt come into it though, the love that cat has given us over the last 13 years is immeasurable.

At last some good news!

Spent endless days and nights bathing the wound and applying cream and my efforts have paid off.  The vet was delighted with her progress and praised by determination.  The wound is healing slowly but nicely and the rash is clearing.  Hip hip hoorrahhh.

Better news came from the path lab - yes, it was thyroid cancer but it was encapsulated and hadn't begun to spread into the surrounding area!!!!  Naturally there is still a minute chance that Honey has a secondary cancer elsewhere but they said that it was only a 20-25% chance, which the vet thought were great odds.  I think that this is cause for celebration so when I get to work later today I won't be as rude to customers as I usually am.  I might even crack open a smile if they are lucky or charge them for their carrier bags.

The vet suggested a CT scan in three to four months at a cost of about £700 but I now think that whatever will be, will be so no scan for Honey.  The visits have really started to distress her, so much so that she leave a pooh trail from the car right into reception and back again.  So no, no more.

As for the insurance, well, what can I say.  Still fighting it out.  Now they are saying that my policy number doesn't even exist ... but I don't care, I've given my dog a good chance of survival and my little friend lives to fight another day (or kill another rabbit as she did earlier this year, but that's another story ....)

Stitches out end of next week.  Will try and get daughter to post some photos this weekend.

Thanks everyone for the best wishes and lovely stories of encouragement.  Thanks also to my teenage daughter who could have been typical of today's young uns and let mother sort it all out but she's slept on the floor with Honey, let her out in the dead of night and generally been fantastic.  She looks like s**t this morning but is just as happy as me.  Imagine that, a smiling yuffff!

Absolutely delighted for you all.  To get down to the nitty gritty, have you got proof that you have been paying your premiums?   If so try the body that regulates the insurance companies, small claims court, CAB, anyone who will take it on for you, these companies will try to wriggle out of paying if they can but if you pursue it, with proof, you will usually get somewhere.

Doesn't it just break your heart.  Little Honey is getting the very best of everything, and only yesterday they were reporting on the television that at Battersea they were having to put down one in three healthy dogs because they were too dangerous to be rehomed.  Why - because some evil human b******* have made them that way.  No dog starts out being nasty their ways are taught and I'd like 5 minutes and a cattle prod wired up to 20,000 volts with their tormentors.

Rant over, but could continue.

There's always one.  I lost a beautiful black lab bitch 3 1/2 years ago and can't say I have ever really come to terms with her death even though she was 16.  I had dogs before and, have since, and now have a golden lab but cannot bond like I did with Kate.  She was that once in a lifetime dog, soulmate, and I swear she could read my mind.

Thanks for asking about Honey.  She seems none the worse for wear, in fact, she's back to being a little buggar!  She's laid at the side of me as I type.

Had to remove one of the stitches myself after we got back from the vets as it was left in in error ...!  The vet was extremely pleased with her progress and thinks that my decision not to have her scanned at the end of the year is a good one.  I don't want Honey stressing or undergoing any more operations unless it is absolutley necessary.  I won't let her suffer though.

Still no news from the insurance.

Hope everyone else is okay and thanks again for your best wishes.

That is fantastic you must be feeling mighty relieved.

Don't let the insurers get away with it, I know it's wearing but believe me persistence does pay off.  Failing all else go to the governing body, it may take a while but these people cannot be allowed to get away with things like this.

Good luck. :D

Good news - I got my insurance money back!!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D

I had to pester a few times as time was dragging on but I got paid out.  This is good news as it now means that all future treatment, if it's needed, will be funded!!  Yey!!!! :D This can only be good news for Honey.

She had a check up last week and there's no sign of re-growth.  I thought it was a bit early to be checking for more lumps but apparently she had an aggressive form.  Honey is doing well and getting away with murder.  All good news. :D

The thing is, do I do the right thing and pay the cheque into the bank and pay the old credit card off or do I pocket the lot and spend it on wild living and food at Harrogate Flower Show?

I am so glad honey is all better, when i came round she seemed good :) :) :)

I think my grandmas dog is on its last legs though, it was up all last night being sick, very poorly, the vets think she has cancer in a bump/spot, this burst a couple of days ago. They wouldnt operate as she is too old :(

It is quite upsetting realy because the dog has been alive all my life so its allways been there at my grandmas, itll be wiered when shes not there anymore, i dont think ive got so close to a dog before :(

Oh Jamie,  this is so sad.  What can I say.  Having it been through it twice before I know how you feel.  The only consolation is that she won't be suffering.   :(You will get used to her not being there but it will take time my dear.  Talk about her any time, we're here to listen as well as chat.   Keep us in the picture. ;)

Sorry, forgot about this thread, mindy recovered, she still has the bump which is looking as big as ever, but shes alive, and thats what counts, its a good job we didnt take her the vets to get put down! She is however, on her very last legs, if its possible for pets to get dementia then she has, she can come over to you for you to pet her, then forget what shes doing and go to sleep, or start pooing on the pavement, something she has never done, etc. I love her to bits and dont want her to go. She hasnt realy been the same since her boyfriend (if thats possible) died a couple of months ago, he was a lovely dog, the replacement is a complete idiot, realy stupid ::) Oh well, hopefully ill get to have plenty more happy times with mindy :)

Well, something i wasnt quite expecting, my grandma had 2 dogs, mindy and marlon. Mindy was the one with cancer and on its last legs, Marlon is the unbelievable crazy, but cute one.

Today i was just talking to my mum about them both, and she said she had forgot to tell me, but marlon had been put down  :( My grandma and granddad have never ever even thought of putting a dog down, and they've had over 20, but marlon had started to wee and poo inside and even in his own bed and everywhere inside, he may not have had any physical illness, but he allmost certainly had a mental illness :(

Its going to be very differant without  him, and I know it probably soounds strange, but I realy miss the crazy dog. My mum didnt know how to brake it to me, because in my grandmas words, I was the closest person to the dog :)

RIP Marlon

Really sorry about that Jamie, its very hard loosing a pet.  Your family seem to be having a bit of a rough year with illness and stuff - good job you've got the prom to look forward to.

Take care

Eli xx

that's so sad Jamie, losing a dog is just like losing a family member (been there several times) and it does break your heart. Talking does help though so if you need to just remember we are all here for you  :D

I've had to have many of my best friends put to sleep over the years, and it's the worst thing I have to deal with. They've all broken my heart with their passing so I remember all the great joy and love they've given me and it helps the healing. Hope you find the same, Jamie.
