Title: Hello from South Wales
Post by: fatferret on April 20, 2017, 11:08
Hi All,

I have just taken on a half plot to extend my growing space (I have a qtr 'ish plot and 2 greenhouses plus a few hens at home). Thought I'd join this forum for advice, inspiration and tips.

The allotment plot is quite overgrown and full of couch grass, mare's tail, creeping buttercup etc.... However, It has 6 large beds with slab paths. You can't see the paths properly yet. The beds are way too big to work without walking on - so I will either need a Heath Robinson floating board system to work them or make them smaller.

I immediately covered all beds with black sheets and tarps to suppress weed growth.  I have removed the bramble runners and large weed roots. I have also dug and weeded two of the beds by hand and covered them over with membrane. I have resisted the urge to plant anything just yet.

The plan this year is to get it cleared, tidied. I'll plant what I can but the real planning can wait for when it is clear.

Hello and welcome to the forum  :)

Good luck with the plot - it's hard work at the beginning but worth it when harvesting begins.

Welcome to the site and congrats on your new weed patch  :D

Make sure you take photos of your progress, and try to get something into the ground so you can have something to harvest.

Thanks for the replies.

I have loads of squashes, beans, peas etc started at home which should be ready to go in at the allotment when the cold snap passes. I've got garlic (overwintered), onions (overwintered), broad beans, spuds and peas on the go on the home plot amongst other bits n bobs.

I plan on putting a lot of easy space fillers to start at the allotment. I did chuck a small row of spuds in as a fellow plot holder gave them to me on my first visit. They are just nudging through now.
