Soak the root ball in the morning for an hour or two whilst digging a big hole, add loads of good compost and some general fertilizer... then plant it..

Bonemeal is like phosphate which is good for root development but you need general as well. If you have blood/fish/bone it is a general mix or growmore fertilizer.

I personally would stick with bonemeal if your soil is ok. You want the roots to get out of the hole you dig and establish well. As mentioned, bonemeal is to aid root development and acts over a long time, which will help your tree go in search of more nutrients and therefore establishing quicker as opposed to sitting in a hole, not needing to put out too much root initially.

3 or 4 handfulls of bone and same for BFB should be enough and loads of compost.. but dig a hole at least 2'deep and wide..
