Nest box height

My husband is getting on with the new coop tomorrow and he just wanted me to check on the height of the nest box. If it is 14 inches at its highest point then slants down for the roof is that high enough. Do the chickens prefer to be a bit snug in the nest box rather than make the height any higher.

Hi,
I'm sure someone with more experience will be along with a better answer, but in mine i gave them several at differing heights and they went for the one on the floor tucked in the darkest corner. I don't think they've ever been in the one thats on a shelf at all!! Any they definatley like to fit in and be snug!

The nest boxes only need to be about 30cm x 30cm x 30cm (or 12"). Altough like what your planning, the ones I've got were about 35-40cm (14"-16") high at the front to allow for a slanted roof.

they like to lay in small, snug, dark places with little/no light and little disturbance   :) :)

That's good then as the nest is the far end of the house away from the door so no light
