Sweet potatoes and regular potatoes
« on: March 04, 2013, 12:52 »
Hello there

Would it be OK to plant sweet potatoes in the same spot as first earlies?  I'm growing my first earlies in my polytunnel and was hoping to put my sweet potatoes in the same spot when the 1st earlies have been lifted.

Or is this a 'deffo don't do' scenario?  ;)

Thanks for any responses!

Mandy

It's not a problem as far as diseases are concerned because they are completely unrelated species.

Could be a problem timing-wise though as sweet potatoes need a long warm growing season to deliver the goods, especially outdoors and where you are.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Spot on, Jay. Sweet potatoes need at least 4 months growing time, preferably in a heated area.  5-6 months in the UK would be more likely, so this doesn't really work with putting them in after regular potatoes.

Ah, thanks chaps.  Will have to re-think where I'm going to put my first earlies in that case as I don't have many seed potatoes to put in.

I was going to be taking over the other half of the plot from a work colleague, so got all excited and drew my plans up in Excel ..... then he changed his mind.  >:(

Oh well, I'll just have to be a little less generous with my planting!

All the best, and thanks again.

Mandy
