Mountain Ash berries....
« on: August 01, 2012, 19:00 »
Can't find the answer yet... Does anyone know if mountain ash berries are harmful to chickens? I know wild birds do eat them, I have one in my garden in full fruit now.

Many thanks

Mountain Ash (also called rowan, scientific name - Sorbus Aucuparia) berries are edible even if a little bitter. Song birds like them too so your chickens should be ok. When my birds free ranged I never worried about them eating the berries of my rowans  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks for putting my mind at rest, I figured if the wild birds ate them they couldn't be all that bad... I had visions of a mass berry collection! Thank you

Next doors rowan tree overhangs our chicken run and any berries dropped by the 3 broods of blackbirds (fine healthy and raised on MY poultry pellets) are eaten by the hens no problems.

The latest blackbird fledgling is taking the rowan berries hummingbird fashion and dropping quite a few ! :nowink: :)
