Broad beans - germination
« on: November 27, 2019, 18:36 »
Hi,

After a successful early crop last year, decided to get some broad beans (The Sutton) in the ground a few weeks back.

3 weeks on and no sign, taking their time or have the rotted?

Been very wet and cold just about everywhere recently - on top of that your local conditions may have helped or hindered germination.
If in doubt, have a gentle furtle with your favourite finger - easiest way to find out whether the seeds are at least still intact even if they're still only thinking about sprouting.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I always start my Suttons in pots in the greenhouse, this year I have brought them inside as they were not moving.
10 days later and they were up!
Back outside and will be transplanted soon.

I suspect you'll be just fine as long as the ground wasn't too waterlogged.  Mine always come through and really it's a case of them not being too tall if we get snow later.  We had a little cold snap a while back so maybe just put them back a bit.  Mine have been in three weeks nothing yet.

Just for future info, started mine off in damp compost in a plastic freezer bag in the airing cupboard, germinated in 2-3 days, then potted and placed in cold greenhouse, then planted out when about 10cm high. Whole process 5 weeks. I've done this two years running now, all 48 seeds successful.
