Belgian 'Lattice' Fence
« on: December 24, 2015, 17:39 »
I am planning to construct a Belgian Lattice Fence.

I have purchased rootstocks and have sources for scion material to graft in late winter.

I have a query about the intersection of the branches. One site I looked at warned that there is a risk of canker where the branches cross. My initial thoughts were that the intersections would be grafted to make a rigid structure whereby there wouldn't be any 'chafing' that might allow ingress of canker. The article suggested the branches just cross over each other.

Has anyone any experience of building such a structure or seen one and can confirm if the intersections are grafted or not.

Thanks

Looking here http://www.deborahsilver.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/espaliers-2013-13.jpg they look just crossed, I would have thought it very difficult to graft at the required angles.

Looks a nice way to fit lots of different trees into a small space too.  ;)

They look as if they may be in a garden centre, it might be difficult to move a completed fence. :)

I thought it would be relatively simple to get a good cambium-cambium joint, it would be a bit like 'approach grafting'.
