bedding under chicks
« on: October 01, 2011, 16:34 »
Hi
I have just been to look at mum and baby and another of the eggs is pipping!
My concern now is the bedding i have under them.  they are on wood shavings at the moment - special ones for chickens - but have just read that they arent good for chicks.  Also mum seems to be struggling a bit - what with the baby and keeping the eggs under her.  She seems to slide around a bit. Her legs seem to spreadeagle. Its a wooden floor under her.  What do you use for bedding - should i change the shavings to something else. I can get hold of some shredded paper, straw straight from the farmer, or soil.

Hi
Thanks for that - will get one or other on monday.  I googled it and there was an article where someone had put a towel under the shavings to stop her slipping and the eggs moving about. So went out to do that - good job i did cos when i moved a pile of shavings i found a load of mites.  I only checked the other day - it must be this warm weather bringing them back out - cos the nesting box was clean before. So have put some de in hopefully that will cure them.  There was literally just the one nest of them.  the rest of the box was clean although i did treat it all.  Checked my other two coops and they are both clean of mites.  I have fought  a hard battle with mites this year, and had beaten them till this spell of weather!
