Totally chuffed!
« on: August 05, 2008, 20:01 »
Back in January I was staring at essentially a field that was my allotment plot elect...8 months on we are sick to death of fresh veg but this Sunday marked the day we picked up our first chickens.

We got two White Leghorns and two Cuckoo Marans (£7 per bird from Whisby garden centre/farm on the outskirts of Lincoln)...I'd spent 2 months building an enclosure and re-vamping a donated hut...Within 10 mins of being out of the box one of them was having a dust bath...When I went to see then this evening there were two more eggs so our total for the first 48 hours of ownership is 8 which explains my heading of being quite chuffed...

I've got them on layers pellets and I've tossed them some collie leaves, a beetroot and a couple of spuds (I did say we have excess!) which they tucked into...

Is there anything else I need to be thinking about at the moment?  They're happy, eating, laying and one of the Marans was feeding out of my hand today...

Luckily they get into the hut themselves at night as I've not managed to catch one of them yet!

Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Congratulations on getting your hens, lovely that they've started laying already. Seems like you have a friend in that hen that was eating from your hand. Good luck, and yes where are those photos!

The instant laying hasn't stopped with 14 eggs in the first four days...We have some corking pictures but we're just trying to work out how to get them on here!

The kids love the anticipation of checking fist thing in the morning...Wonder how long that'll last?!
