I really don't know, Tony. I'm looking at my options but I want this to be right - far too much work to redo if I get it wrong!

John, there's a video somewhere with a chap growing spuds under just a thick layer of straw!

He just laid them on a raised bed, covered them and tamped the straw down, and 'Hey-Ho' a decent crop appeared as and when required!

I guess it's the green version of growing them under black plastic, but the idea seems pretty sound to me!

Tried that in 2017 - growing potatoes under straw but I wasn't very impressed with the results - a lot of slug damage.
