Garlic not come up
« on: April 02, 2013, 18:16 »
I did a thread about 3 months ago about my garlic not coming up, and everyone said give it time.

It never ever came up, so I dug in to the bed to see if it rotted and the garlic is just sitting there, where I planted it, and it looks identical to what it did when I planted if, and maybe a little more swollen.

I bought them from Wilko's.

Any idea why they never came up, they have been in for 4 months+

And what should I do with them now?
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

Perhaps they don't think it is spring yet - can't say I blame them

My money would still be on them eventually growing, specially as they haven't rotted....did you look underneath to see if any roots have grown?

No roots, no sprouting nothing at all.

Very strange!

If they have not rotted they will almost certainly eventually grow. I have had garlic take two years a number of times. There is some coming up around the apple trees at the plot that I moved there last autumn after digging them out of beds I was clearing where they had been planted the previous year. Like you I thought they were no good, but couldn't bring myself to compost healthy looking cloves,so I just plonked them in where there was space (and they are supposed to be a good companion to apple trees) and this spring they are looking good! :)

Hi,  I have exactly the same problem.  Bought mine from Wilko too so I'm thinking maybe it was a dodgy batch!

I've left them in the ground for now but don't think they will do anything at all this year. >:(

My garlic has been in for 6 weeks now and still no sign of it, but given that today was the first day for the best part of two weeks they've not been covered in snow I'm not really surprised.

Last year, the same garlic (I save cloves each year) was planted at the same time and the first shoots appeared in two weeks.

Think it's fair to say they've had their chilling period to promote bulb formation this year!  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Yeah, I think you'll be alright for the bulbs splitting :)

Hello,

We've had exactly the same problem with Wilkes garlic - planted in oct and no sign of anything in march so we dug them all up - not one had shoots or roots. Replaced with local garden centre bought bulbs and after 2 weeks shoots are showing

All our Wilko garlic failed too.

Won't bother with their stuff again, it's probably substandard.

Planted some before Chrismas, around November and they came up, survived the weather and are about 6 inches high.

Planted another row about 4 weeks ago and they are all showing, about an inch high.

Have to say I looked at the Wiko garlics and they looked pretty small and poor. Using an old saying about wine: If you wouldn't drink a glass then don't cook with it, well they looked too poor to cook with, so I didn't bother, also seemed a bit costly for what they were if I recall correctly.

What seems odd is that they have neither rotted nor grown. Wonder if they will do anything as it warms up?

I've dug'em up and going to use the bed for something else.

Next year I'll buy from a garden centre or catalogue.

I've not even put my spring garlic in yet...although the autumn ones are coming along nicely.

I should be ok to the garlic in this week or next, shouldn't I?
