Ornamental Grass, Miscanthus
« on: March 10, 2012, 14:21 »
I'm growing several  ornamental grasses from seed this year as i need a lot of plants.

The Miscanthus Sinensis are coming up but theres no instructions on the seed packet for pricking out.

Anyone know if you prick these out in clumps or single seedlings.

Thanks

Each one will make a plant in its own right, but they are often transplanted as small clumps in nurseries to make a viable pot full in minimum time, so you could do either.  For the maximum number of plants, prick out singly and they will get there  :)

These are clumping grasses, which are superior to the dratted non-clumpers that take over a yard. However, sinesis varieties also need water during dry times. You wouldn't think so about a grass, but this is the case here. Just to make you aware in case the potential hosepipe ban occurs this summer.

Where the Miscanthus is going is quite damp, altho i wouldn't say it was permanently damp.

OH has complained that i'm growing too many thistles. I have big swathes of them and mow paths through them, i think they look beautiful.  But he says the seeds blow every where and they have to go. >:(

So being a good obedient wife :tongue2: i'm getting rid of the thistles and planting big patches of grasses to get a good height,  and other things to blend with the colour of the grass, keeping the paths through them. :)

Grandson is helping with the growing and we spend many hours on the phone planning and talking about it. Keeps us both off the streets :D
