Fresh Laid News bulletin no.15 - January 2008

Happy New Year to all our hen friendly supporters!

As I write this bulletin today our first collection for the year has just taken place – 450 lucky girls.

Last year was a wonderful year for us and we sincerely hope that 2008 will prove even more successful. We start the year with some excellent publicity …

Jamie’s Fowl Dinners

Another reminder about the programme scheduled to be shown on Channel 4 this Friday, 11th January at 9pm! Everyone should watch it and encourage family and friends to watch too. We hope Jamie’s serious look at the British poultry industry will make consumers everywhere think a little more deeply about the cheap food they purchase and encourage them to spend a little more to help improve welfare standards. Watch out for the BHWT; we make an appearance at the start of part two along with 120 ex-bats that end up having a lovely retirement…. With Jamie’s endorsement the Battery Hen Welfare Trust could be taken to another level … and more hens will be permanently taken out of their cages. What an exciting prospect!

We’ve hatched a new Website

We’ve got a new website and we hope you like it; there’s a gorgeous Gallery of Spoilt Hens which will feature our latest pin ups as well as our rosette winning photo for Spoilt Hen of the Month and as always the site gives lots of information on caring for ex-bats and how to obtain some. The site also focuses on all the other positive ways in which we can help battery hens as well as explaining why farmers still have hens in cages and how the egg passes through the system until it finally reaches its destination in your food. We have started our directories of hen friendly products to buy and hen friendly places to eat too … we’ll need lots of your input on those items. Please do take a look and let us know your views.

Footie Fans

Anyone a Liverpool fan?! Some very generous supporters have donated two tickets to watch the Champions League game - Liverpool v Inter Milan – on 19th February at 19.45 and we’re offering them up to the highest bidder to swell our New Year coffers! The seats are in the lower centenary stand – row 14, seats 228 and 229, which I am told is at the Kop end so will have loads of atmosphere and apparently they have a very good view too!

So come on, even if you aren’t a fan, you might know someone that is, it would make a lovely prezzie … raise some money for the girls and enjoy the game!

If you are interested, email jane.howorth@bhwt.org.uk with your best bid. Closing date for bids will be 1800 hours on 31st January 2008, any bids received after this time will be null and void. If we do not reach the reserve price of £80 for the tickets, they will be withdrawn. If you are successful you will be notified by email and payment will be required by Paypal prior to tickets being sent out.

Best wishes

Jane x
