I spent ages trying to get "slips" from a supermarket sweet potato cos the garden centre ones needed a second mortgage. When they grew, I put them in  water to root but they never did, so I gave up for this year.

It is a bit late/early now. It's a 6-9 months crop, so you want to start chitting early spring - though well worth considering to buy in more suited varieties once   - chits, cuttings, all root rather easily and fast, try damp sand or light sompost.

One of the mistakes people make is putting the cuttings in water instead of compost. Put the tuber in some water and remove the shoots as soon as large enough to handle and pot on immidieately.
