Leggy tom seedlings
« on: February 19, 2010, 13:51 »
Our tom seedlings which don't have any true leave yet,  are around 2" tall now but are getting a bit floppy and falling over a bit.  I think they will straighten up as the plant gets stronger and older.  The trays are on a table about 2-3' from the window and are not falling towards the light specifically.  We turn the trays every few days.

Should we worry?  Do they need to be nearer direct light?  I say not to worry, they'll come good but husband wants some more advice - so if anyone has any tips, we'd appreciate it!  Thanks.  :)

They are too far away from the window and trying to get to the light.

Put them in the window and put some aluminum foil behind them to reflect the light back.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

...even though they are not falling TOWARDS the light? - does it still mean they need to be nearer?

Thanks.

If they're just falling over, they are probably even more leggy than I imagined, or even "damping off".

Move them and get the foil up ASAP, if the compost is wet, let it dry out at bit.

Yes they do. When you pot them on, plant them quite deeply. You'll get extra roots from the buried stem and they should bush up better.
I'd have thought you were a bit early unless you have a frost-free greenhouse to grow them on in.
Good luck anyway.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Right-o, thanks.

P'raps the seeds are a bit close to the surface too!

We planted this time last year for our basket toms and they grew fine and produced lovely plants for baskets.

Mine have germinated and are still on the kitchen window sill as I am not sure how they will cope in my frost free greenhouse (first year I've had it).  The temperature is min. 6 centigrade.  Do you think that will be okay?

As Noshed says, you can plant them deeper when you pot them.  This is true if you have to repot them more than once, and again when you plant them in their final positions.  I plant mine in bottomless pots in growing bags.  I plant them in the growbags and then slide the pots over and fill up with compost.

No - you really need around 14-15 C, 58 F in old money.
