Cucumber????
« on: September 27, 2013, 18:13 »
Hello all. This is my first time growing cucumbers so I`m not really sure about this. Is this a cucumber. It said cucumber on the packet But it looks strange to me. I`ve not seen one with spikes on before. I was talking to soomeone at work and he said it souned like I was describing a kind of Gerkin. Can you tell me what this exactly is and when its ready to eat. It may be a silly question but I`d appreciate some help.
                                                                                              Thanks in advance. Mick

Looks like a Ridge cucumber, most varieties of which are normally for growing outdoors.  Slice a bit off the bottom and have a taste, I'm sure it will be Cucumber :) (and the rest of the fruit will heal over if you don't want to eat it straightaway)

It's a cucumber.... looks just like mine. I can't think of the variety at the moment.

looks exactly like the cucumbers I've grown this year (mine are 'outdoor' varieties (you can grow them inside too))

the prickles should just rub off  ;)

I believe they're fully grown when the top of the cucumber (where it's attached to the plant) has 'rounded out' but I've been taking them as and when I've wanted to eat one so I'd say it's ready whenever you want it  :)

I'd go with all of the other replies.  I grew some with prickles and some without.  I peel or rub off the prickle skin.  I thought the prickle ones were 'gherkin types', certainly mine seem a bit more sour than the smooth ones, but might be my varieties.

I too think it is Marketmore. The spikes rub off. That one wants eating now. If the skin is tough or bitter you will need to peel it. You can eat them at any size. If you let them get too old the seeds get tough.

Hello all. Ate the cucumber today with some lettuce and tomato out of the greenhouse. The skin was a little tougher than expected but much tastier than out  of the supermarket. I`ll be growing these again next year.
