Pros and cons? Good or bad (or indifferent)
I think this might be the only way I get the top of my apple tree pruned, but i wanted to know how easy they are to use.

I have no experience of the pruner but as an angler can tell you that a 2kg weight at the end of a 2.4mtr pole is not going to be easy to wield.
Put two bags of sugar in a carrier bag on a broom handle and you will see what i mean. :)

OH uses a pole lopper with ratchet for pruning our fruit trees each year. No power and the ratchet gives the blades a lot of pressure. There is a pruning saw to go with it, but I cant think when it was last used. The first year he did get the cords a bit mixed up to start with as he worked it out and how not to get tangled in the branches - but now he is very quick and accurate.
[one year he was dealing with an overgrown, tall plum tree edging the next door paddock and had started with a ladder but ended up climbing into the tree with his D saw to get the right cutting angle. The calves in the paddock knocked down the ladder >:( and stood round the base of the tree looking up at him ..... they were only curious but .... :ohmy: Then when he was rescued and onto the next stage with the loppers they were pushing up to him, eating the branches as they fell - and the cords of the lopper! Eurch! >:( >:(

I've made my own from a couple of ally broom handles and a pair of secuters. I actually use it for getting the good elderberries from the top of the bush. When I dig it out of the shed, I'll post a piccie. :tongue2: Cheers, Tony.

I have a similar thing made by Bosch - its about 10 years old, i dont know if they still make them.
It does do the job but....
as someone else said very difficult to control when fully extended.
cuts tend to be quite ragged so not good for fruit trees
battery soon needs recharging
if you are standing below and trying to watch what you are doing - guess where the sawdust ends up
would i buy another - no

Thanks everyone. In the end I ended up a ladder with an old fashioned pruning saw!
I did however buy myself a neat little cordless chainsaw for when the branches are off the tree!

We have a pruner which extends and you pull down the blade with a piece of rope, it is very easy to use and does not need much control as there is a hook that you put over the branch, which keeps the pruner in place while you cut.
It is similar to this one , but without the saw. It doesn't cut very thick branches but is perfect for pruning:

Don`t know if you have Lidl in france but they often do a pole pruner like the one in Junies link only it costs about £6.
Cheap but well made and well worth looking out for. :)
