Title: Ducks and Drakes
Post by: slowef on August 06, 2007, 10:55
I now know that I have 4 Drakes and 2 Ducks, is this going to be a problem they all get on as they are from the same batch but I was worried about the ratio,  I would hate to have to part with them.  The drakes are mating with the girls so obv no hatching as they are siblings  :(

erm drakes mate with anything and it dont matter if they kissing cousins or not , so worry not  thats how it all began keep them as they are and just keep a few more hens next time around . if you want to eat the resulting males do so or pass them on

This is embarasing   I just bought a small flock of ducks, most of which I can't tell male/female. A pair of khakis, one just sleightly darker on the head when wet. A pair of buff orps, one larger but the same color. One pair of "mallard" types (them I CAN tell) One fawn runner and 3 sort of dark khaki with small bibs. Are bright orange legs a way of "telling"?? They had had them abt. 6 mos. but did not know the age. The bibbed ones sort of have that baby look with stripes on the faces. any help??

Only the ducks quack, drakes make a feeble little attempt at a quack, more of a croak :)

Yea, I know that one. But just try it with 9 terrified ducks all runnig in a tight knot   I got them home sunday afternoon. I separated what I thought were the males. They won't stop tearing up and down the fence. I know they are drinking, but I'm not sure that they have stopped to eat.
