Pinching side shoots off tumbling toms ?
« on: May 01, 2013, 13:16 »
I have a tumbling Tom plant which is full of flowers but also a lot of side shoots. Do I pinch them out or should I leave them being a tumbling type ?

Thanks.

Leave them, they are a bush tomato.  I put mine in pots and hanging baskets and the fruit all cascades over the sides

Do you mind if I butt in with a question rather than starting a new thread??

I am also growing some tumbling toms - I have my eye on some pots that I can hang over the balcony/fence for them, but they are only about 4L, will these be large enough?

Last year  grew all my tomatos in 7.5 of 10L pots but they were all cordons!

4l is much too small.  I am not sure 7.5/10l pots are big enough either, but I am more familiar with diameter rather than volume.  You really need something the size of a bucket otherwise you will have to keep watering almost daily which can be a bind. The orange ones in a DIY store would be ideal and they cost just £1.50.

We've grown tumbling type toms - Gartenperle - in wall baskets for a number of years and two plants per container thrive in the sunshine against the warmth of the house in containers roughly 15 x 10 x 18 cm, not much more than about 4 litres, I'd say at a rough guess. In 14 " blacksmith style wall baskets, one plant per container is enough.

The only problem last year was that it just didn't get warm enough during the "summer" to get a very good crop, hopefully not a problem where you are.

Thanks for the imput!

I'm planning something a little strange!

I have a little fence just outside my backdoor, I currently have two balcony troughs on the fence (they will have fuschias in them by summer) but I would like to add some round planters to the collection then it will go:
round pot (tomato) - long pot (flowers) - round pot (tomato) - long pot (flowers) - round pot (tomato)
So kind of have a mix of flowery stuff and productive stuff??  It might sound strange but I like the idea of mixing the two (but the tomatoes will need arrractive pots!!)

I was trying to compare the volume of a hanging basket which I have heard people grow them in to the size pot I'm looking at (not my strong point...)

Hannah :)

Willow, I am planning on doing something similar with hanging baskets.  I have 4 brackets up and every alternative one will be tumbler tomatoes.  The other ones will be begonias because they didn't mind the awful weather we had last year and flowered regardless.

I did exactly the same lay year and got good crops - the lack of sun last summet meant they didn't all ripen sadly but I got loads of green tomato chutney made instead which I love! Just be prepared to water daily....

I grow my garten perle in hanging baskets and add water retaining gel.  It does help!

Re watering; some people put a saucer in the bottom of the basket to retain moisture. I line my tumblers baskets with strong plastic with a few holes stabbed in but above an inch or so to create a small reservoir.
I've always put 2 plants in a deep 14" basket but feed well and it werks for me. Don't know if the individual crop would be better with one plant. Probably......... ::)

If your baskets with the toms in are right outside the backdoor, than frequent watering will be easy

That arrangement should look really lovely too  :)
