Fatsia Japonica
« on: June 20, 2010, 10:00 »
I have a large Fatsia Japonica that's got a bit out of control, we have had it over 12 years old and its really starting to dominate one of the beds in the garden, does anyone know how much of a 'pruning' these can take before they take offence?

I originally bought it as a house plant, and turfed it out into the garden once we ran out of house space!
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....

You can prune these and it should still be OK to do now, but do it in stages.  Prune out a couple of large branches now and these will resprout pretty quickly, then prune out another couple next spring and so on till you get it back under control.

Mine had a hard pruning this year - partly due to the frost and partly because I didn't tie it in well enough. Id say I reduced it by 60% - 70% in Feb and its perfectly happy now, but it did sulk for a while.

Wait until the dormant season then cut it down to a foot from the ground. :D

It never goes dormant, it just seems to grow no-stop, even through the last winter, I have decided to hack back the most annoying branches (ones blocking path!) and then be a bit more polite to it later in the year!
