Pruning a Fatsia Japonica HELP !!
« on: January 28, 2009, 15:11 »
I've got a few Fatsias which due to being left for too long are now about 10ft tall but look like palm trees as there are no leaves for the 1st 6ft of stem.

Can I just lop them off at about a foot from the ground and have any chance of them growing back ?

Any help would be appreciated.

It does sound a bit drastic. The usual rule is to cut out 1/4 to 1/3 of olld wood. When I did Mum's it had a few lower shoots so I left those, and cut out the tall ones.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

Trouble is with that is that I have 6 foot bare stems and only leaves at the top,and no shoots or leaves below. :(

If I cut back 1/4 then I'll just have 5ft tall bare stems with no leaves.

So I suppose It's going to have to be chop it off at the bottom or leave it as it is.

I've revamped a Fatsia like yours and if you cut down a stem hard, it will resprout and you will get 2 or 3 stems emerging just below the cut. I'd suggest you wait a bit before pruning - say another 4 weeks - so growth starts again quickly. I'd also only do 1 or 2 stems per spring.  Takes a year or three of pruning, but you get a decent shape shrub back with leaves down to the base.
