When days get bad at the refuge, they get bad
« on: July 19, 2013, 23:12 »
Today the good news is a mum Podenco dog and her pups were rescued from living in the scorching sun, the bad news is she has 8 pups!!
Another dog was found today, a Mastin pup, about 3 months old, the bad news is her eye was seriously swollen, she was taken straight to the vet, her eye is past saving, it is being removed.  Poor little girl

When the economy is so bad it is a sad result that some animals will suffer.  I hope things start to improve, it must be so heart breaking for you to witness Pamela.  :(

There was another young dog left outside the refuge this morning, we have absolutely no more space to put another dog until we can have a fundraising event to get money towards new kennels.  It will get worse as people are going on holiday so dump their dogs on to the street. A few weeks ago 6 pups, just hours old were left in a plastic tub, in full sun, at the refuge gate!  We had to call the vet to put them to sleep. They were not in good condition.  We have just under 40 dogs at the refuge, not counting yesterdays dogs, plus about about 30 being fostered. If only people would sterilise their dogs/cats it would go a long way to helping the animal situation. We are trying to get all the dogs done at the refuge, but more dogs keep coming, naturally in sterilised  .  It is law for dogs to be microchipped here, but very few abandoned/lost dogs are chipped. It costs the refuge around 400€ a month for food, not that many locals care, they want us to take dogs but never think of the cost to us.
Some days I wish I did not know about the refuge!

Pamela - she has such a sad face - you can see that she has had a difficult start in life. I hope that she gets rehomed.

I really admire what you are doing at the refuge - just remember that you are making a difference.

A father of one of the volunteers found these pups in a box today, left at the gates of the co-operative (for olives  not the supermarket!)  there were 2 dead in with them.  They are Bodeguero dogs, good for catching rats.

It is just heart breaking - those poor dogs are so lucky there are people like you to take them in.

Pamela - you have had such a rough week - you must be wondering what is going to happen next. It is just a shame that there is not a neutering programme available.

The refuges in Spain have been full to overflowing for years, I think it is just down to the mentality of not wasting money on animals.  We have a vet come to the refuge every week, she sterilises a dog a week, or we aim for a dog a week. She charges us around 40-60€ depending on the dog size. Normally a vet would charge 120€ for a small dog, so I can understand why people are not getting their dogs sterilised, females are more, our vet charges around 60€-90€ depending on the female size.
I wonder what I did before I joined the refuge! Most of the volunteers are female, for some reason we do not have many men!! Jim went along once, when I was alone, to help me. He did not enjoy the experience, but he helps other ways, like agreeing to Charlie, our Labrador, I came home with him one day,  then Timón staying after being hurt and now Tibet!!. Plus our 2 cats!
