Strange garlic
« on: August 11, 2013, 18:37 »
I have accidentally mixed up the leeks and garlic this year - forgot I planted garlic and popped some leek seeds in as well  ::) . Anyway I was digging up the baby leeks to spread them out a bit, and accidentally sliced a garlic in half.  When I looked at it, it was an onion, or so I thought.  Anyway, chucked it in the trug and when I got it in the kitchen the whole house smelt of garlic, but it is just one great big clove, looks just like an onion!  It's about  4 cm across and very very smelly!,  is this normal?

If it is garlic, it sounds as though it hasn't cloved up properly (perhaps yet). When did you plant the cloves? Another option, perhaps, might be it being elephant garlic?

Well, I've never grown elephant garlic but I understand it is actually a leek variant rather than real garlic, so I'd not expect it to clove. If it's not elephant garlic, then it should clove.

Elephant garlic does have cloves,

You learn something every day - especially here ;) - and, I think, it would be a sad day when you didn't.

Yeah some garlic are slow to form cloves and stay as round like onions. They are still delicious and dry well. My garlic that I've just pulled out was planted in September last year and quite a few were roundies as well as cloves. They all grew exceptionally well.

Three out of 12 elephant plants this year have also stayed as roundies and the others have huge cloves.. The roundies will be great for baked garlic!! or I might keep them to plant and get some extra large elephants next season.. Mmmmmm still got to decide.

So can I just leave them in for another year then, to get bigger and form cloves?

No - pull them out and let them dry as you would do with normal garlic. Then in Sept / Oct plant them out.
