I've never had problems with birds eating courgettes.... don't know about rabbits as i don't tend to suffer with this problem....they tend to get caught by the cat before they get anywhere near.

Leatherjackets (cranefly larvae) will eat all my courgettes, marrows, pumpkins, cucumbers, squashes, gourds, etc., will eat my plant tems just below soil level unless I soil drench around them.

And rabbits will nibble the fruits unless fenced. Not a big deal losing the odd cougette, but if you have spent a lot of time growing a potential show winner marrow or pumpkin and it gets eaten it's very frustrating.

A case for slug pellets
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Only thing round our way that has a taste for the plants seems to be deer. Though there has been a big cull recently so I don’t think I will be bothered by them.

That being said, of the 4 pumpkins planted into the compost heap, inside the chicken run, one is missing. Gone. No sign of it. I don’t think the chickens would have eaten all of the plant and left the rest and deer cannot get in as the fence is 6 foot high.

20 plants… that’s allot of courgette soup and ratatouille (is that how it is spelt?)

I’m growing 6 plants staggered with early and late under cloches and we love the stuff!
Sam.

Organic with treated timber present.
What can you do? I don't want the house to fall down.

How true - Have two cougette plants and one has been attacked by slugs and snails, will it survive or should I accept it as a loss? The two long stalks with leaves on have been chewed almost to the base.
Try my best to be Organic but don't always make it

I had a problem with slugs eating my courgette plants when they were small.

If you wait until they are larger and maybe start to get hairy stems they should be less attractive to slugs and able to withstand a little bit of munching!
Organic :)

Sweetpea, you still have time to pop another seed in a pot, once a slug has been in plants rarley survive(they would if human will power and daily cosetting counted,but..).I usually plant out in june when danger of so far non existant frosts are over.I also sow relativly late so they will be ready to plant in june.If youplant out when they are small protect with some slug deterant,if when larger be aware that the stems can be brittle.
